During non-breeding times, horseshoe crabs are distributed in a large range extending far offshore toward the continental shelf (Shuster 1979, Shuster and Botton 1985, Botton and Haskin 1984, Shuster 1985). [Animals have been found offshore in water as deep as 290m (Botton and Ropes 1987)!] At these times, animals are found unamplexed (not joined together for mating).
